Biography Section

Biography and Education

B.A. in Special Education from Illinois State University. There I learned cutting-edge behavioral practices, grounded in behavioral theory, as applied to behavior and learning in students with severe behavioral and learning challenges.

M.A. and Ph.D. in Special Education from The University of Texas at Austin. My areas of emphasis were emotional/behavioral disorders and autism, but also this is where I first began my work in juvenile justice. My dissertation research was conducted in the Corsicana State School, which housed youth who had committed felony offenses and who were diagnosed with mental health disorders. Since my early work in various juvenile justice facilities during my doctoral program, I have continued my focus on improving programming for the most disenfranchised youth of our society.

In 2018, I was invited to join the national Center on Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports as the partner for alternative programs. As a Center partner, I provide technical assistance for all types of alternative programs, including secure care juvenile justice programs, residential mental health treatment programs, and alternative day schools. I also develop training and support resources to guide PBIS development, implementation, and monitoring in alternative programs.
